Movie Tuesday

movie night

Movie Tuesday returned after a three year absence. The evening was well attended with room for social distance. There was a little chair dancing and some singing-along muffled behind masks. By all accounts the movie was a hit and everyone went home happy.  Movie night will continue on the last Tuesday of the month until summer, when the long days interfere with viewing.

The holiday spirit

Every year at this time there is a holiday food drive at Islington 2000/2010, with boxes filling up repeatedly in the entrances. Also we annually organize voluntary donations to thank our staff with holiday bonuses. Christmas trees and decorations are visible all through the common areas. These are routine at this time of year at Islington 2000/2010.

But this year there have been a few new events solely because of individuals stepping forward to add a little festivity to the season. Below you can see the sweet creations of children and grandchildren, who learned how to make gingerbread houses in our activity room on Sunday. What a sticky good time everyone had! We may want to keep this as a seasonal tradition.

A few days later, the Lunch Bunch, who meet every other Tuesday at noon, were treated to a  catered Christmas meal. At least 25 people came to enjoy the hospitality and fellowship.  Pictures are below. The spirit of the holiday season is definitely alive in our Vertical Village thanks to some particularly generous individuals. Merry Christmas to us all!

Understanding Quorum

The sister buildings at Islington 2000/2010 were built a few years apart and have differences in some noticable as well as some less obvious ways. Here’s one: quorum at MTCC 570 is 25% of owners; at YCC 351 quorum is set at 33%.

The Condominium Authority of Ontario explains it this way:

Quorum is the minimum number of owners that must be present, either in person or by proxy for business of the corporation, such as a vote, to be conducted. The standard quorum for an AGM is when owners who own at least 25% of the condo units are present. The quorum requirement is reduced to 15% on the third and any subsequent attempts to hold the meeting if quorum is not reached on the first two attempts to hold the AGM.

In recent years attendance at AGMs has led YCC 351 to consider amending its quorum requirement to align with the Condominium Act of Ontario’s 25% requirement. The challenge for YCC 351 is that it needs a majority of owners to vote for this change. While recent AGMs have met the threshold to conduct business, there have not been enough owners or their proxies there to achieve the required majority.

So, the goal to reduce quorum from 33% to 25% has led the Board of YCC 351 to become a little more proactive. Owners at 2010 Islington – if you did not attend the last AGM or vote through proxy, expect to be personally invited to vote in 2023. More about this soon.

Frank is 100 years old

Our neighbour, Frank turned 100 on Sunday.

There was a small reception in his honour in the party room Bistro on Friday afternoon. Frank entertained us with a short talk about his life. He was born in British Columbia in 1922 to Japanese immigrants. During WWII his family was interned as they were considered enemy aliens, but Frank eventually was chosen to serve in the Canadian armed forces. He worked in the Ontario civil service after the war and has been a writer for most of his life, still providing a column each month for a Japanese/Canadian publication.

The he credits his wife Betty as the secret of his longevity. She certainly takes good care of him. He blew out the candles on a festive cake and we all toasted him with bubbly. Many more years, Frank!

Annual craft Show & Sale

The Craft Club held their annual Show & Sale on November 12th after a forced absence of two years  due to COVID-19 restrictions. It was a rousing success. There were many jewelry finds, delicious home cooked delicacies, a silent auction and crafts, crafts, crafts. All proceeds will go to Sleeping Children Around the World, a local charity that provides bedkits and mosquito nets to needy children overseas.

After a final tally a grand total of $3500 went to to Sleeping Children Around the World which will allow the charity to provide 100 bedkits overseas. Every part of this charity is operated by volunteers in our community, and the bedkits are produced in the communities where they are distributed. 100% of the proceeds from the Show & Sale will help needy children. Well done, Crafters!

Euchre Club Party

Our Wednesday night Euchre Club got together this week with a fun and festive meal.

They ordered takeout from a local chicken restaurant, and provided liquid refreshment and cake for dessert. Our euchre players have traditionally celebrated annually this way, but missed being able to dine together due to pandemic restrictions.

Heartfelt thanks to the organizers of this event for rising to the special occasion and making it an evening to remember.
